….they imply lawsuits against!

Sadly, my former employer is making the argument that the post that used to be here constitutes use of material gathered and/or work done in the course of employment, etc., etc.  And I assume that somewhere in there is the threat of Unspecified Actions to enforce compliance with the demand that the data go away.  I’m not really sure there’s a case there, but that’s what’s said.

More important, the post was apparently causing grief to former colleagues — who must still deal with the organization and persons mentioned therein — whom I really have no desire to antagonize or deride.  So, alas, it disappears forever.

    Josh,
Of course, I love quality sarcasm. I really like it when I have laughing so hard my gut hurts. You know, I look at almost all things through Holden Caulfield’s eyes (from The Catcher in the Rye). I simply cannot tolerate PHONIES. Ashley Judd, like so many Holllywoods is simply without much substance.

I loved your three virtues of Africa. Flat-out funny,

    Thanks,
    rob

    you had me until this:

Now, let me remind the reader that we were in bloody Africa. There are many lovely things about Africa, and especially about South Africa. Still, continent-wide, the standard for a good day there is pretty set:

    Do I own nothing?
    Is my flesh rotting?
Do I have to sleep near or on feces?

although its not surprising given the amount of energy you put into smearing one person that you would save up some of it to smear an entire continent.

  3. Joshua Treviño Says:

Come now, africanman. Perhaps this comment by me on South Africa might prove illuminating. Don’t take umbrage at hyperbole: Africa is a rather bad place for people, on the whole, and it’s not a “smear” to acknowledge that.

That… was hilarious! I knew there was a good reason that I can’t stand most celebrities! What a bee-ach!

Having spent substantial time in Djibouti and some time in both Ethiopia and Kenya, I can attest that the standards for a good day in those areas match what is listed above. And, for the record, I was at the University of Kentucky basketball game (GO BIG BLUE!) against the University of Florida on March 7, 2004, the game that AJ supposedly brought us victory in by rallying the crowd. Unfortunately, after Ashley rallied the crowd, the crowd didn’t score a single point. But the UK players, who were up by 9 at halftime and had gone on a 17-3 run to start the second half before AJ performed here “magic” as the celebrity “Y” in Kentucky, easily handled Florida, ultimately winning by 20 points.

  6. africanman Says:

there is a lot of poverty and suffering in africa, but your choice of words and admitted hyperbole was offensive and unecessary. in addition, as i indicated in my original comment, it led me to conclude that your description of ms judd was exaggerated.

So Ms. Judd is a bit of a spoiled airhead - anyone surprised?  (Did I mention that she’s a big Kentucky basketball fan?)  The story is worth keeping in mind not because it dings Ms. Judd, but because it helps remind us that when celebrities head around the world and do big photo-ops in places like sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, etc. we should treat very skeptically the claim that these are “heroes” who are out to “change the world” (and save it, too).  Mostly, they’re out to make themselves a good name - and even “serious” news magazines are willing to play along because a cover with Bono, Brad Pitt, or whoever sells a lot better than one discussing the latest trade negotiations.  (That goes double or triple or quadruple for the celebrity flacks at People and the like). • I was a Hillary Clinton supporter — inasmuch as I thought she would be easiest to beat — until the past month. Back in March, several friends told me that the polling indicates that Obama will be easier to knock off, and at the beginning of May, the data swayed me to their view. Lo, it is happening, and though we don’t deserve it, we now have a shot in November.

  • Chris Bowers loves Googlebombing, and he’s at it again. But is there any data to suggest that it achieves anything? And to pull back a bit, is there any data to suggest that Internet-search results affect, you know, voting? In the absence of either, this seems mostly like a way for online-activist types to pretend they’re doing something.
